An apology to the slugs and snails

I've been trying to grow sunflowers from seeds this year, without much success, once they get to about 12" tall they keep getting eaten, but strangely from the top, not the bottom.
I put some on the table in the middle of my bench, though that would stop the snails/slugs getting to them, but no, still they ate them, from the top. I thought they just didn't like the bottom leaves.
I've managed to salvage three plants which are now a good 4ft tall, now that the leaves are higher they're not being eaten.
There was also a random plant in the corner of one of the beds, it had got to about 12" tall, I was out in the garden yesterday morning admiring it, mowed the lawn, did a bit of weeding, turned around 20 mins later and the whole thing had been eaten, I said to the dog, 'omg where did that go' (like you do), there was not a snail or slug in sight. 10 mins later the dog threw up on the carpet, a whole bunch of sunflower leaves in all their glory! He just looked at me sheepishly, he knew what he'd done, little monkey.
He's a largish Yorkie, which is why he can't get to the plants which are now 4ft, the 12" ones were the perfect height for him.
So Mr Snail and Mr Slug, I do apologise for the false accusations of sunflower munching, it was the dog all along!
This is all that was left.

I've been calling the snails as well for eating my plants, but maybe they're not the ones that have been munching.
You haven't been sending Bengo here for his dinner have you.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

:rotfl: No I haven't.
I've found him truffling around in the herbs before nibbling the leaves and I have a planter full of wild flower seedlings for the bees that he likes, but I didn't think he'd eat an entire plant.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0 -
Thanks for giving me a laugh. I have the same problem but no Yorkshire terrier to blame. So I'm not going to apologise for my snail/slug suspicions!
The beautiful thing about learning is nobody can take it away from you.
Thanks to everyone who contributes to this wonderful forum. I'm very grateful for the guidance and friendliness that I always receive from you.

My problem is sparrows! I was blaming slugs for my sweet peas disappearing but caught the sparrows munching away when they thought I wasn't looking! They ruined my winter garden by demolishing my primroses.
Now waiting to see if I actually get any flowers despite the lack of leaves...0 -
My problem is snails high up my garage wall. This wall is covered by a grape vine, clematis and a dense loganberry. There is a lot of damage to all of these. Is there such a thing as a liquid spray to decimate these thugs? I cannot reach high enough.0
