In my experience most solicitors will only certify for free if you have been a client of theirs in the past and even my own bank(s) would not do it unless they knew me personally, just my tuppence worth

With the PO, you can re-use the certification as many times as you like

Money saving website, though, isn't it? Frankly, I was interested in the answer to this, and if I can save money, that's why I spend so much time on this forum.

    Absolutely correct.

Went into Nationwide (rang Nationwide's head office first to check) and they scanned it and stamped/signed it for me :)

I don't object to paying the Post Office for a service - I object to having to pay to prove my identity when opening a savings account.

I also object to the ridiculous rules that some banks adopt. I once applied for a John Lewis Partnership card, which is administered by HSBC. I am also a First Direct customer, but would HSBC certify my passport? No. Would the Partnership staff in John Lewis certify my passport? No.

Don't pay it then and dont have the savings account.

Set up your own bank and put your own rules in place then.

I Don't blame them. They are all separate trading companies. I wouldn't in their shoes.

Cheshire BS is just a trading name of Nationwide BS.
There is no relationship - they are the same legal entity.

Cheshire BS and all the other regional brands are being discontinued.

This explains the relationship between Cheshire and Nationwide to some extent.

My IFA doesn't charge for certifications. He did several copies of all the vital documents last time I asked, so I don't need to trouble him again in future.

Oh dear! What if you have a break in and the certified copies are stolen?
What a plonker of an IFA producing copies willy nilly.

I walked into a bank I had no accounts with and they gave me 4 copies of both my passport and driving licence for free.

The problem is that they don't understand what they are certifying...and nor do some poeple on here!

They are only certifying that the photocopy THEY have just made of your passport is indeed a copy of the said passport - and that is it.
There is no reason at all why just because they are of a different group they should refuse.
THEY ARE NOT certifying that the person holding the passport, and talking to them is YOU - this bit seems to be missed every time. I can understand if that were the case why they would want to know you...but they ain't.
They are merely certifying that the paper they are coutersigning is a genuine photocopy of the original.

I have tried to explain this on several occasions to some thick as pig !!!! bank staff but they were so stupid that they could not understand this point.
