Not sure where to turn

this is behalf of a work colleague and I thought some of you more knowledgeable people may have some advice/help.

Basically he booked a long weekend away for himself and his wife to Spain.

Their flights were with Ryan Air.. they got to the airport and boarded the plane, only to be informed there was going to be a 2hr delay, but they were boarded and ready incase a slot became available.

After around an hour and a half they were informed there would be another 3 hour delay and as such Ryan Air had decided to cancel the flight.

He was informed the next flight they could take had already had all the spare seats taken and they would have to travel the next day, they declined.

All this was due to the FrenchAir wokrers strikes.

He went throught he motions and Ryan Air have refunded for the the Flight costs.

The problem is when he contacted the insurance to try and refund the cost of the hotel, aiport parking, car hire etc the insurance told him, that he had booked his trip on the 21st of the month and on the 20th there was a warning on the Uk Foriegn Travel Advice website, about the strikes, and as such when he booked the holiday and took the insurance he should have known this and therefore he cannot claim.

Does this sound correct?

Is there anyway he can recoup some of his losses?

    He could argue that it was not reasonable for him to know/ check there was a strike in France - that may hold some weight given that he was not actually going there. He has nothing to lose by following the insurer's complaints procedure.

    Is it a condition/requirement of the insurance that he check that website in advance?

    It seems the way that they explained it was that this was public knowledge before his booked his break and as such he booked this at his own risk.

    It seems completely unreasonable to me.

    He also tried contacting his credit card issuer and they explained that they couldn't help as the services such as the car hire, hotel were still being provided.
