Hi

My hubby bought a used road-legal electric golf buggy (top speed 15 mph) previously used for egg deliveries, to use for his local gardening business. Neither of us drive or have experience of car insurance, however he eventually found an insurance company and they set up a fully comp policy on a learners basis (previous owner also had similar policy with NFU but they had contacts within).

They initially needed a mileage figure to start with but the buggy has no mileometer, so they upped his mileage limit which would ensure he would never exceed it, and they confirmed it would be ok. They also know that hubby has one arm, born that way.

Now he has received a letter saying that the insurance policy has been cancelled/revoked and his first instalment refunded, but the admin fees have not.

The letter is dated within the 14 day consumer cooling off period. Is there anything we can do? It's really difficult trying to find insurance for this vehicle as it is. Hubby is very dispondent and horrified he has been driving around in the buggy... unknowingly UNINSURED!!

Thanks in advance.

First find out why they have cancelled then take it from there

Having a cancelled policy on your record is bad news.

So once you know why see if you can sort the issue and get it reinstated.

If you need cover urgently then see if a local broker ( not swinton) can help.

Bit confused by the highlighted bit, neither of you drive, you DO need a licence to be able to drive the buggy, you set up the policy as a learner driver one, OK but who was going to be the qualified driver sitting with hubby? My guess is they have worked out it will be no-one and have cancelled it for that reason.
Also, to have a learner driver wanting (at least) class 3 business use would be next to impossible. Another guess is the fact that someone at the insurance company has messed up, there is no way any insurance co. would give a learner class 3 business use.
I'm assuming he was asked the question about having a driving licence. How did he reply to that? Oh and a good job he wasn't stopped by the police or he would have been in a LOT more trouble - no licence is a biggie
Basically, hubby is going to have to pass his driving test then re-apply for insurance

    Hi Buellguy

Thanks for your response. Hubby does have a licence, and he has checked with the DVLA and police and is perfectly legal to drive the buggy alone as it is classed as one seat, with learner plates, as did the previous owner for 10 years.

I have more details: The reason for the policy cancellation is an administrative error by the insurance company - they told him he could drive it straight away but they had not sent him the amended paperwork to sign and return regarding the mileage limit increase.

I am just not happy that the admin charge has not been refunded to him in this case.
