Recently got a Clarity card. Not used it yet but well aware of the T&Cs as they are there on site to be read before even applying. Small print is part of life & our choice whether to read or not, but we still have to abide by it. When you get the card you are advised of your personal terms & limits & have the option to cancel the whole thing if you decide it does not suit.

Why on earth would you have expected your bank to accept a reverse charge call?

Were you in Turkey or, as it appears to me, on a different planet?

I've been told by my bank they will accept some reverse charge calls (maybe because it's a paid for current account, can't remember if it was before or after I changed to it) in emergencies but maybe they changed that now as the website only shows a landline number for abroad calls.

There was a post on MSE about the Halifax Clarity from Jan 2012 where the person was told they could reverse charge them by dialling as below:

Dial 01 to get the international operator.
Ask the operator to set up a reverse charge call to: 00442920446001

There's also a public facebook post from a Halifax representative from April confirming they would do the reverse (about 6th post down in google when searching for "halifax reverse charge call")

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

This isn't an emergency or lost card.

They didn't check the basic operation of their credit card (or accommodation booking).

Even if they had 'reversed the charge' the result would have been the same.

Oh I agree, the issue was they missed one of the card limitations/rules, just saying they could have saved money to clarify this rather than dialling from abroad :)

The Halifax told me the same thing when I phoned to let them know I would be travelling abroad "dial 166 (or something like that) for the international operator and ask them to reverse the charges" - so it's reasonable for the OP to expect that.
Never argue with an idiot. Especially not this idiot because I'm always right anyway.

All cards can get blocked at any time, particularly when abroad. So whether or not you are within your cash advance limit, you should never rely on any particular card working. Have backups - in some cases even paying fees/loadings can be cheaper than being stranded/having to pay for expensive phone calls.
