High mileage - how high is high?

A work colleague a few years ago has a Saab 900 that went through the 250k miles mark when he owned it.
My Mum's 1985 900 GLi (classic) was on 330k when she had to let it go.I am a mortgage broker. put it another way: how long is a piece of string?
I don't think there is a specific number for this, if the car is running ok and doesn't need much doing to it then keep driving it.
In terms of getting a decent sale price for your car though, I think 100k is a psychological barrier for the majority of buyers (the minority being MSE forumites who'll be happy saving the money on 100k+ car).0 -
Hi everyone
So - its a baby thenForgot to mention its petrol, but it seems that from what everyone has said, they do long mileage these days.
I did have a problem with a burst water pipe but made sure it didn't overheat too much as I know its an aluminium engine and that can be fatal. Checked the oil after and head gasket still ok - phew!
Not bothered about resale really as I know its not worth much now.
No idea what I would replace it with -slight mid-life crisis, so toyed with an MX5 but everyone Ive spoken to has said not to, to maybe another Corsa, providing some young lad hasn't thrashed the nuts off it.
Will make sure I get the oil done a bit more regular tho0 -
oh and no cambelt either - yay!0

Keep the oil levels checked and your corsa should be fine for a good while yet - those chain driven engines hate being low on oil. If they start to make a rattle sound at idle you're on borrowed time. My experience of petrol vauxhall engines is that it tends to be o2 sensors that go faulty or the throttle body, both can be sorted pretty easily.
If you were talked out of the mx5, how about a Toyota MR2 roadster? Just as cheap to buy, and if its like the wifes reliable, bar a dodgy battery 5 year ago its never gone wrong in 8 years, and it gets a good thrashing by me weekly.0 -
I'm currently running VW Golf with 242k on the clock. Runs fine and has been fully serviced all the way through including 4 cambelt changes at 60k intervals. Last MOT passed with no advisories.
Full service history on a decent car that's run on motorways and you'll see those distances easily.Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.0 -
Engine-wise, any modern well-engineered car should clear 200K without trouble.
Your problem at this kind of mileage is more likely to be suspension-related, and general bagginess.0
