I am about 85% in equities so far and the rest is cash and a Strategic Bond fund, so I am thinking about an ETC for a defensive asset.


Historically, I know Gold has been used as a hedge as it is not correlated with equities. But with Silver having more practical uses these days as well as its precious metal value, would anybody consider it in place of Gold?


Or possibly Palladium or Platinum?


Thoughts please?

I am not an expert on commodities by any stretch of the imagination (well, dog biscuits - but bizzarely nobody does a tracker for them) although I did manage to do quite well with gold (and silver) and got out before the drop. The experience taught me something that is obvious really, which is that commodities seem a lot harder to read than equities, for example, as whatever the underlying 'justifications' for the prices and trends, they are very speculation/flavour-of-the-month driven and this makes their value rather unpredictable as to whether trends will continue, stop or reverse.
