Returning something late and getting exchange

I bought some shoes from a seller on Amazon. Unfortunately (my own fault) I sent the shoes back to the wrong seller. They are kindly sending them back to me. However the original seller is now saying that as its past the 14 day return time they will only exchange the item. If I exchange them for a smaller size and they still dont fit (the reason I returned them in the first place) can I then return them again for a refund or am I stuck with shoes that potentially may not fit?

At this point it is probably dependent on their goodwill. It's unlikely they'll exchange then subsequently refund if they aren't willing to refund in the first place.0

If you're past the return period, you have no comeback.
It wasn't their fault, so it'd be unfair to expect them to agree to a refund despite being over the returns period.0 -
Did you raise the issue with the actual seller and return to the wrong seller or with the wrong seller and returned to wrong seller.
If it's the former you should be fine, the latter and as others have said its goodwill.0 -

I disagree - it's unfair to tell a seller you're returning something, and then take forever to actually return it and expect them to refund anyway.0 -

That raises a good point.
Under the new CCRs you have 14 days to notify of cancellation, and a further 14 days in which to send off the goods. Therefore you may well be within these timescales.
What date did you buy the shoes, and when did you tell them you wanted to return.0
