Car Tax phone line - anyone else had a problem?

This is not a big deal (I hope) and "I guess" it must be my fault, as the DVLA helpline lady says she's never heard of this happening before. Recently I renewed our car tax on their automated phone system, thought I had ordered a 12-month disk, but I received a 6-month disk instead. I was so sure that it said "You are now cleared for a 6-month tax disk, please press 1 for a 12-month disk" that I even made a note of this as i thought it was a bit odd! She says it doesn't work like that. And that if I buy a 12 month disk and get the right form and send the 6-month disk back, and apply for a refund, I will get a refund within about 6 weeks. I have done this. It doesn't specify that people who have bought a disk of the wrong length will get a refund, but she told me I would! I hope this is right. (The disk only came into force today, that is when I noticed.) Am I the only person in the world who has ever done this? I know 2 elderly people ("older than me") who have given up using the automated phone line because it is complicated, and now have gone back to taking their documents to the nearest Post Office. It is not VERY complicated, but there are several long numbers to punch in, and you have to be alert. It would be a real help if the DVLA would publish the "script" of the automated line on their website. The Government seems to want everyone to do stuff on line, and is talking about progressively withdrawing personal and phone support. This could be a real disaster, and is not fair for older people. I notice in the news today that a lot of people even avoid self service tills in supermarkets. i use them all the time, but they are constantly throwing wobblies which then need a person to sort them out (and that apart from any User Errors.) PS I did put paragraph breaks in, honest, i don't know where they went!
