Long term illness and benefits help

Hello. I wonder if you can help me.
I suffer from asthma and I wonder whether I could claim income support.
If I can't what other benefits could I claim for my asthma. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks. :)

Income support is for carers and lone parents of children under 5.

Does your asthma mean you can't work? And does it mean you have care and /or mobility needs?

Asthma - if very unusually severe - could lead to awards for both ESA and PIP.

    For ESA - for example.
If you once a week have such a severe asthma attack that blood oxygen drops enough to significantly disrupt concentration and awareness.
Or if you can't most of the time use a wheelchair to wheel yourself 50m, or walk the same distance.
Or, if you are at real risk of severe consequences due to an attack brought on by activities - similarly you might qualify.

This would in general only apply to people who are regularly hospitalised, as an example.

I'm unable to work cos of my asthma is very bad. I get very breathless that I'm unable to talk. Plus, I'm at a high risk of getting an asthma attack. If I can not claim income support, then what can I claim???

Millions of people, adults and children suffer from asthma, having asthma in itself doesn't entitle you too claim benefits. If you are too unwell to work through the condition or you need care or have mobility problems you may qualify for for either ESA or PIP. Both are easy to apply for but neither are easy to qualify for with asthma.

Indeed. I have it and it's by no means mild. But asthma alone (because they've finally found something that controls it. I just need to be careful) wouldn't qualify me for benefits.

My daughter has regular asthma attacks and has done for 21 years, she was 1 years old when she had her first one. Asthma suffers do get too breathless to talk at times, it's part and parcel of having the disease, there is 'no high risk' of getting an attack as every sufferer is at risk.

Are you saying you are too unwell to ever work or is this just a temp problemYou cannot let asthma stop you from working as the disease will effect you just the same doing your weekly shopping or walking up the road.

Ok. Thanks for all the reply. I have phone CAB and they have told me that I need to go back to the doctor to see if I can claim income support. Also, I have done a benefit check and the result was that I could claim income support. I would really appreciate non judgmental advice. Thank you all.

The benefit check is wrong. It's ESA you claim.

you really need to change your CAB if this is what their advising!
there is NO way that you can claim income support.
your main option, as said brfore, is ESA.
but to be honest, if your only illness is asthma, then its highly unlikely.
if you take your prescribed meds, then your condition should be fairly managable

I don't just suffer from asthma I also suffer from Mental health as well.
Do I still need to claim ESA then ???.
