Land with no address?

Had this plot of land with nothing but an old shed on it in the family for decades. Recently I decided I might try and make it a habitable place, perhaps even get planning permission for a house etc. before I begin any of that though, the land doesn 't seem to have an address. It 's always been known in the family by a name but when I did a post code search on RM's site it wasn 't showing up. Their address finder only lists the other various properties (both named and numbered houses) but mentions no " land" addresses so to speak.

So I looked it up on land registry, and found it listed as "Land to the south of, so and so road"

I've looked up on their site about updating the address but info about that seems to relate to the registered owners address being updated, not the actual land. Is this something I need to contact RM about? Since I suppose it 's mostly them and their systems that use addresses.

Or is there some other government service that deals with addresses?

Basically all I want to do is get it so it shows up in RM's address finder under the name we've always called it.

Addresses is the post office. Not sure what their policy is. You should be able to market based on the postcode just fine in the meantime.

The important thing is more to show good title. Either land registry plan or deeds or something. You ok on that front?

You will have to apply to your local council first (you'll need the Street Naming and Numbering Officer in Transportation Services or suchlike).

Once they have given you an address they will inform Royal Mail to get it added to the postcode address file.

Yes you have to go to your Local council and speak to the person in charge of street naming. They will then give you the address and then depending on the situation with the house either you have to inform Royal Mail or they will.

I wouldn't bother, unless there's some reason I'm missing. You don't need a Royal Mail-approved postal address to apply for planning permission or to have good title.

Ah. I should have guessed those sods would have something to do with the process (you can tell from that we don't have a particularly good 'relationship'). OK thanks for putting me on the right path, looked into it and they have a nice little price list here for this sort of thing, what a surprise.

Also as one of you mentioned, as it happens the deeds are in a bit of a muddle. I suspect it's nothing but perhaps a oversight back in the day. My granddad bought the land and left it to my gran when he died on the proviso that it was given to their sons (my dad and two uncles) when she kicked the bucket. She's still going though. My dad passed into the abyss a few years back and left his share to me and my sis but when it came to digging up the title register the solicitor was a complete dunce about it and it was 'left' for a later date.

I bought the title off the land registry the other day when I was looking it up and discovered the land is still registered to my granddad at their old house... He's been dead nearly 50 years...

Actually it's because I want to live on the land regardless of the permission so I'll need a postal address here, i can't be bothered to get a po box or something. This assuming this title deedissue is sorted out.

If you're planning to live there without planning permission then it's probably better to stay quiet about it, rather than flag up to all the authorities that there's a new letterbox in town!

This is what people keep telling me.

I am very reluctant to talk to them. I don't feel like there's any legislation in place preventing me from living here but knowing those !!!!!!!s I'd still end up in court about it.

The area is supposedly considered greenbelt but is surrounded by houses in three of the four sides (three properties of which are less than 100 yards away). Plus there's recently been someone buy a garden from a house just down the road a bit, he stuck a caravan on it and is now building a house on the plot.

To be honest I don't think the council have got much of a leg to stand on if they did try and prevent me staying here provided I offered to pay council tax. But, yea... It's if I want the hassle to begin with as I'm sure they'll create some regardless.

Is there definitely no way I can just tell Royal Mail to update their records?

Because it doesn't belong to her. It's more complicated than I explained. It wasn't really left to her, it was left to my dad and his brothers, but she was to hold it in trust. Something like that anyway. Why the !!!! my gd didn't just give it outright to them i'll never know.

There will be. Is it officially agricultural land?
