How common are Special Provisions with CI policies?

Hello all.
I'm very new to CI cover and I was hoping to hear from anyone who has knowledge about this.

How common are Special Provisions with CI policies?

I ask as I've recently enquired about CI with a company, filled in the forms, made the calls and the result was that I wasn't suitable for the standard terms because of an imminent routine knee operation at hospital.

I've now had the operation and things are looking great but it concerned me that despite the op going well there is now a clause which says (paraphrasing heavily) 'if anything bad happens to you as a result of your knee, you wont be covered'

I suppose I'm just surprised that despite everything working as it should I may need to sign up to a policy for the next X number of year that wont ever cover any problems with the knee.

I've looked at policies from other companies and they they all ask that I declare any recent operations as well, so I've been assuming that I would be dealt with in the same way.

Thanks.

Are you sure this endorsement applies to the critical illness cover itself and not just the total permanent disability rider which is added on to it?

    That would be more usual.

If so, the insurer is saying it is potentially too difficult to separate the cause of a future TPD claim from the earlier issue when it may, or may not, have anything to do with the knee problem.

Of the fifty or so conditions covered by a good CI contract, none of them have much to do with knees.
