PIP timescale

My OH had a viral infection mid May. He didn't recover as expected and developed breathing problems. After several treatments and misdiagnoses he has now been told that the virus attacked his heart. He has severe valve incompetence & heart failure. Obviously this has affected him immensely. He has gone from a fit, active person to someone the Dr has said he can " potter about". Apart from the emotional implications, the cardiac nurse advised him to claim ESA & PIP as he now can't work. ESA should be OK but I think PIP requires a period of 3 months illness ( am I correct). But when does this 3 months start? From when he had the virus or from the diagnosis? We have his hospital discharge letter which states his diagnosis but it is dated yesterday, although it does also state that he had the virus 6 weeks ago.

Hi, so sorry to hear about what's happened to your OH. As far as I know the three months starts from the date the disability / virus started. I'd suggest you ring the PIP helpline as I'm sure they'll be happy to clarify this. Good luck.

This is right. The diagnosis doesn't matter. Some of us have waited years (23 for me for a few things) for a diagnosis, but have had needs for years.
