Don't be ridiculous, it's not complicated. I've set up lots of payments from First Direct using the new security device and it only takes a very few minutes to do each one. 3 or 4 minutes maximum, I'd say, and that's only because I check and double check the sort code and account no. a few times.

My apologies. I was being ridiculous.

The new technology at FD is awful. All I wanted to do was send £5 today as we bought some flowers for a colleague whose dad passed away.

As I hadn't sent money to this colleague before I had to go through various layers of setting up a new payment which took, simply, ages. Generating a code for this, code for that - in the end I nearly gave up and just send £5 in the post!

Perhaps you should register for the PAYM service?

Is paym available with FD? According to PAYM's website they are joining later in 2014

Phoned Custermer services a couple of days ago no issues. Set up a new payee last night and sent payment using new device last night was probably only logged onto one line banking for less than a minute. Device is tiny so no issue carrying it around (unlike Barclays etc). Plus you don't need to use it every time you log on.

Can't see any PAYM yet on the FD website or their app.
  • FD Customer services have been absolutely fine for me too. Quick, fast and direct unlike most banks out there.

I really don't have any issues with FD currently as whilst they have introduced the secure key / digital secure key for things like setting up new payees and applying for new products I very rarely need to use it.

Logging in and paying existing payees can be done without the secure key currently so 99% of my activity is done without the need for using the secure key.

On the rare occasions I need to speak to them on the phone I still find the service excellent.

On the even rarer occasions I need to use the secure key to set up a new payee for example I have found it an easy and straight forward process.

^^^ all of this! Very happy with FD still.

I have noticed that, on the odd occasion that I need to ring, they do take longer to answer now. Sometimes i get the message about having a high volume of calls. I never got that from FD before this. This seems to me to be more due to using the 0345 number instead of the 08456 number.

I got my security key today and set it up. It was a bit fiddly as I had to login 3 times before I succeeded. Now it's done, I am unlikely to take the key out with me. Most functions which require it are ones which I would do at home on my laptop anyway.

I doubt that it's anything to do with the new 0345 number. Smart people have been using the 0113 number to get through to them for years ;)
