Getting slightly annoyed is an understatement!

You should have resolved the issue properly in the first place. Cancelling the direct debit wasn't the best approach. Since the matter relates to 2010 won't be high on their priority list. As they've most likely written the balance off. The default will be their parting gift. As legally you defaulted on the contract.

At the time I didn't realise it would have caused an issue on my credit file. I also had no choice but to cancel the direct debit. I tried to explain to them that It was a mistake in their fault but told me I would have to pay the bill anyway and would get a refund in due course. I was a student and didn't have the extra £100 they were charging on top of the monthly bill, so I either let them take the money and incurred bank charges, or I cancelled the direct debit.

All the issues were resolved eventually with orange reducing the bills accordingly but I didn't realise at the time that it would have affected my credit score, I was not warned of this and didn't think it would as it was not my fault.

It has never been marked as a default, only as arrears, and the bill was settled eventually.

I fail to see what I could have done differently regarding paying off a bill I was wrongly charged and couldn't afford?
