New Worcester Boiler

I've been quoted £3800 to remove old Worcester Highflow 400 combi boiler and fit new Worcester 440.
I am on the third floor too and have been told scaffolding will be needed to attach flew to outside wall which could cost up to £500. Also, boiler is in a very difficult position - I have been told it will be 2 days work.
The problem I called plumbers in for is that I need a new diverter valve as when central heating is off, the pipes are still getting hot. When plumber called round he said that there was a leak and corrosion in the pipes inside the boiler (which I could see) so he said boiler on the way out.
Opinion as to the quote please, and do you think it is likely that a new boiler is required. It has been working fine until this weekend when I realised that pipes were getting hot and that the boiler kept firing up for no reason.
I am getting a couple more quotes tomorrow.
Boiler is abut 14 years old.
Won't be able to respond to any questions until later as I have to go out now for a couple of hours.
thanks, frogletina

the boiler is 1800 ish if you google, which means 1000 per day for labour, whihc would suggest its a high if the boiler is going in like for like.
does the 3800 include the scafolding.
i'd get a few more quotesThe futures bright the future is Ginger0 -

No, the scaffolding is an extra cost.
I am getting a couple more quotes tomorrow, though the second one has quoted £70 call out which would be deducted if I had a new boiler. That seems unfair. Obviously if the cost of the new boiler is less than the original quote it would be worth it, but it seems a high cost.
The plumber who visited today did not charge although he said that usually it would be £45 - but I wonder if I will have to pay that if I don't use their company.
It seems it can be costly getting quotes...Not Rachmaninov

When you call them up, just say you want them to come and quote for a new boiler. Don't call them up to ask about any problems etc. All you want is a quote. They won't charge you for that. And if they try, don't let them quote.0

Second plumber visited today. He has advised that cost of repair will be around £500 but is going to also provide a quote for a new boiler. Also he said that a cherry picker would be fine, no need for scaffolding. He could not guarantee that the repair would be sufficient as it would depend on the amount of corrosion as to whether he can remove the parts that need replacing needed. However, he did say that he was still servicing these types of boilers and their predecessors and that there could be 10 years more life in it.
Will need to find out about costs if repair not successful, I am assuming labour charge but not parts - but I will ask in advance.
Rang third company - they are no longer going to come round regarding a repair today but will come tomorrow and quote for a new boiler and with no charge to do that. Not Rachmaninov

Boiler sounds REALLY expensive, is it a huge property?
You say you are on the thrid floor?
Is this a flat/maisonette or just a house with many floors?
Looking on the WB site the highflow 400's were discontinued a long time ago, the newer similar ones are these:
http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/boilers/gas-boilers/greenstar-highflow-440cdi
Ann according to WB, these boilers have been specifically developed for larger two bathroom properties where there is a heavier requirement for heating and hot water.
The type of boiler you need will depend on the size of property, number of rads and bathrooms. Were in a 3 bed house, 1 bathroom, but with a few more rads than normal and we fitted a WB 30CDi
Do You really need such an expensive boiler?
http://www.worcester-bosch.co.uk/homeowner/boilers/gas-boilers/greenstar-30cdi-classic-system
We got the actual boiler for under £900
As for paying for a quote? Tell them to jog on.
Just tell them you're interested in a new boiler and would like a quote.
If you go thru WB's site it will give you a list of approved installers in your area, this boots the warranty upto 8 (iirc) years. Well worth it0 -
I am still waiting for the third quote - not happy they have not sent it yet. Did not pay for the quote. This firm and the last one are approved Worcester installers. I was told I would get 8 years warranty.
It is an apartment in a block of 8 which was a new build all with the same boilers.
It has one family bathroom and two ensuites - it also has underfloor heating.
The last company said that if I went with them they would also do any repairs needed to the central heating system, it has not been easy to find anyone to maintain it successfully. When I contacted them before they would not take it on as they said they only took on systems that they installed. They installed half the original boilers but they said that the company that installed the ones on my side of the building did not do a good job. I can agree with that as the boiler was installed in a dreadful position and I've had to have a filling loop installed as there was only originally a valve on a pipe which was in an almost inaccessible position. Not Rachmaninov

You would be right to get a few more quotes but remember if that is boiler, flue, magna clean, room stat, if new pipework is required, labour and scaffolding that seems a fair price. A lot of people google the price of boiler but forget the amount that goes with them.0

Had the final quote today, £3995 with 7 year guarantee - plus extra £150 to supply a central heating system filter to give the boiler an 8 year guarantee.
What worried me is that it says inspection of all radiator valves for obvious defects and replace as necessary. Well - I don't have radiators, and the guy who checked knew that as he said they would maintain the underfloor heating in the future.
No idea about magna clean. I have 4 room stats but the temperature of the rooms never seems to match the settings.
Second quote came back with a cost between the two others - no mention of a system filter though. I assume it will come with a 7 year guarantee as it is an accredited Worcester engineer.
Now I have to make a decision. Not Rachmaninov
