Lower paid job - compensation

My role has been made redundant and as an alternative to redundancy i have been offered a job at lower pay.

The new role is subject to a four week trial and at the end i will receive compensation payment equivilant to the difference of 1 years salary.

my questions are- they have quoted me as though i was a dayshift manager and not a nightshift manager. I am moving to a lower paid role but still on nights surely it should be the differnce of the actual salaries for the nightshift role. They do not separate out the premium when paying us.

the other question is this payment i will get, will it be taxable?
