British Gas - Free Loft Insulation

I had British Gas out this morning to survey my loft for loft insulation.I have on average 100mm, BG said they wouldn’t be able to fit free insulation as its over the 75mm threshold.The BG surveyor did recommend I needed this topping up but I wouldn’t qualify.He said I could pay for it to be topped up.

He then suggested a work around.If I got in to the loft one weekend, cleared out all the insulation, bagged it up and disposed of. Call BG back up, get another survey.As no insulation I would then qualify and there for no charge.

This approach seems illogical. He said its all too do with the Carbon offset.
This approach, removes 100mm and BG come back and add 150mm.

Has anyone else had any similar issues and if so how did you move forward? Any recommendations?

Came out to me last week and couldn't even get in the loft with their ladder. Refused (politely) not to use ours. Waste of a morning.

If your loft already has 100mm, then you don't NEED to fit more insulation, which is why you don't qualify for the scheme. It would make a slight difference to your bills having extra, but not enough to justify the cost of fitting it in a reasonable timescale.

Ripping out 100mm of perfectly good insulation just to qualify for "free" fitting of 150mm is criminal, bordering on fradulent. Who do you think pays for the "free" insualtion? Everyone on this board that you are asking if you should proceed, that's who.

I agree that it seem a little unethical. BG have quotas to fill, so if they fill part of their quota by insulating your loft, somewhere along the line there may be someone who had a greater need but doesn't get free insulation because BG have filled their quota.

Plus, you have the faff and time wasted ripping up the old insulation, may have costs in disposing of it, and the hassle of having BG back to install.

Personally, I would either leave it as is, or alternatively, go out and buy some extra yourself and top up.It's not a bog or an expensive job.

Surely a real MSE would put the old stuff back in on top of the new stuff, then you've got yourself 250mm of insulation for nowt.

Not very ethical though.
