go to a proper running shop (not the likes of sports direct) tell them your budget and ask what they can do - it's perfectly feasilble to get things for less than £80-100 if your not running vast distances each week

shops often have last seasons models etc. which will potentially be within budget

don't keep running in your crap shoes the risk of injury is too much in my opinion
All these suggestions are sensible but maybe not necessary for everyone. I've never had my gait analysed or bought expensive running shoes and despite having various injuries from playing football, I can still run regularly without any pain.
The only thing I look for is that the trainers are comfortable so that I don't get blisters. I have never paid more than £30 with my current pair only costing £20.
People say I am lucky but I just have a feeling that there are more of us 'lucky' ones out there than expected.

I had a gait at my local DW shop. There was some pressure to buy that day but I sad I'd try them out & come back on pay day. But I bought Brookes GTS Adrenaline (last years stock as they were cheaper) for £45.00 from www.sportsshoes.com. Great little site.

I had those shoes and loved them. Gutted that the 4 is a tad on the small size and the 4.5 is too big.:(

Try sportsshoes website. I run in Mizuno Wave Inspire - I'm on version 9, but they've brought out a 10. As others have said depends on your running style (gait), but anything is better than converse! You'll do yourself a long term injury and the same applies if you use cheap running shoes. Mizuno inspire is a support shoe, guidance via sportsshoes on what trainers are right for you. Also depends on what mileage you do, but £60-£70 will get you a pair of shoes that last.

I take your point here - not everyone wants to pay a lot for running shoes. It all depends on what mileage you do. I run 10ks/half marathons/marathons so I need a high mileage shoe that will last and provides me with adequate support. Prior to this I didn't spend a lot. Also depends on what surface you run on. If off road on grass then cheaper trainers should suffice. Pick up last years model or even the year before and you get a good pair of shoes for a decent price.

No. If it's off road, you need proper off road shoes. Cheaper trainers won't provide enough grip.

I'm talking about country footpaths you don't need trail shoes for this. I've used mizuno trail shoes on bog standard country paths and they're too much. I use my old trainers for this and they're perfectly fine most of the year even on a park run. When I'm running around the fells in the lakes then yes I need shoes with plenty of grip ie proper off road trail shoes but I wouldn't recommend these for flat country tracks with grass to grip to. Just my personal preference given what I've experienced not necessarily right for all. I'm running the Loughrigg Loop in 2 weeks so definitely taking proper trail shoes!

I would class myself as a medium distance runner, running 6 or 8 miles three times a week and all on pavements. The only two criteria I used to select my cheapish trainers was price and how they fit my feet. I have had them for just over two years and have got close to 2000 miles out of them and they still look in good nick. I reckon I could easily get another 4 or 5 years from them before they start to affect my feet. My previous pair of equally cheap trainers lasted 7 years.

Has anyone got any recommendations on just general pairs considering I can't afford to go get proper ones fitted?

I can recommend Dr Martins or some steel toe cap boots, There is no such thing as a general pair,
