Is there any way on a PC that you can control the kind of X rated sites visited. We are getting concerned about whether our sons are going onto them on their PC's. They both have Windows XP & use Firefox (as well as IE).

Thanks

There are LOTS of parental control software that is available.

Do you want to see what they have been going on, or do you want to prevent them from accessing anything like that?

The first ones rather easy (use your browser history)

The second one, you'll need parental control software which someone else can advise on if there's any realiable free/cheap ones!

  • follow this link and it will explain the way to set up parental controls on your P.C, http://www.cvc.net/hp/setting_parental_controls.html But do be aware still ways of accessing pornagraphic pictures, even if you have parental controls, one is obvious turning safe search off google images. If the parental control option does not do you any good try downloading Surf control or Cobion as these will restrict which ever you wish to restrict from your Kids..

I know there was one called Cyberpatrol or something which was very strict. It would analyse the image and if it detected certain things that represented !!!!!!, it would bring up a screen which required a password to allow access back onto the machine.

Was very reliable and used in a local social club.

So if people swore or accessed !!!!!! it would block it. It used Keywords also like "xxx, !!!!!!," and other words that i wont list for obvious reasons haha

I think for kids you should be more worried about chat rooms and instant messengers than a bit smutty websites. As the dangers lie in people pretending to be someone they aren't. Best solution is always to have to computer in a family room so that you can see what they up to. Also don't have webcams and teach them not to be stupid enough to go and meet anyone from the internet.

As for X rated sites, if it's boys, at least you'll know if they are straight or not! After all, they are going to see that sort of thing from somewhere, before the itnernet it use to be staying up late watching tv and magazines. Now it's the internet, so I don't think you should clamp down too much as their are easy ways around any security as you just go through obscure sites.

Teach your children rather than controlling them, as soon or later they are going to have control themselves, so it's better they have morals than need someone making the decisions for them.

What should that matter, not really relevant at all? Although I do agree that the best solution really is a family room setting rather than attempting to use parental controls which depending on the age/technical knowhow of the children in question isn't infallible.

The OP was asking what they can use for parental control. I believe if the OP was asking for advice on the best way to bring up his/her children, then he/she would ask that.

In answer to her question though, there are parental control software out there that does just that. Understand it won't work on its own though if you see what I mean :)

Yes... one bootable linux CD/DVD later and you are completely free of any software or parental controls and there is no way of tracing that either.

Talking to them is your best bet - one way or another they will circumvent any protection (I've gotten very good at beating company internet filters, peasky things that they are). Unless you are willing to sit there and watch them 24/7, you can ever be 100% sure of what they are doing, so abit of a chat might work?

Not that I'm telling you how to raise your kids but these things are very easily bypassed and if they are older than 12, you can bet they will find a way sooner rather than later and then you will be blissfully unware of it as well...
