Insurance options with a long term illness

Hi Everyone,
I'm 28 and got married last year, my husband and I rent our house, have no children and are non smokers.
However, I have NO pension, NO life insurance, NO savings, but I do have debts, and a life threatening medical condition. My husband has an IVA, and it worries me that we do not have any life or critical illness cover. (my husband has a pension, as far as I'm aware)
I had a previous life and critical illness insurance policy when I had a mortgage with my ex boyfriend, and when I was diagnosed we did claim off the critical illness cover to pay the mortgage, I have no idea what happened to the policies when we separated, whether he cancelled it, whether he changed it to his new partners name and kept the policy, or it its still active and nothing has been happening with it.
I have a few questions I'm hoping you can help with:
1. How do I find out if my original insurance policy is still active? If it is still active, would I be able to transfer it to me and my husband, instead of me and my ex? Because the policy was taken out BEFORE my diagnosis, will I still be covered because I claimed previously, and would I have to now declare my medical condition?
2: If it was cancelled, what is the best option for my husband and I in setting up a new policy, do we need to see an independent broker due to my medical history? Is it worth getting both critical illness AND life cover?
We have no house/contents insurance either, and I don't have a pension.
We already pay out so much to pay off our debts I'm reluctant to take on too many insurances in case we cant make the payments, but NOT having insurance at all is really worrying me, because we won't be able to cover the other persons debts on our own if the worst should happen.
If someone can point me in the right direction, I would be grateful.

If you had a Life AND critical illness policy and made a claim on it - thats it, it paid out. Once it pays out it ends.
Whatever condition you have, that is most likely to be excluded on any new policy as will any related conditions to that condition.
I would suggest speaking to a specialist broker for impaired lives life insurance. I used to look after one when I worked for a life office, they had insurers they dealt with that most brokers will not have come across.
I dont really know a lot about pensions but some do include life insurance so that may be worthwhile speaking to an IFA about.I am a Mortgage AdviserYou should note that this site doesn't check my status as a mortgage adviser, so you need to take my word for it.
