any advice? returning to uni.

2010 - 2011 I went to university, due to health issues I withdrew. I had a student account at the time and I am still in my overdraft for this (£1600). I recently got a letter from the bank saying this is switching to a graduate account (I assume this is an automatic letter based on the assumption I graduated)

I have been studying part-time with the open university since October last year to continue my degree, but I would really like to go back to a brick uni full-time.

The issue I have is that due to my parents' income I am only entitled to the minimum maintenance loan, but they are unable to support me financially if I go back. Between now and September I won't be able to save any money as I am paying off a credit card (I can clear this before I go to university, if I return)

I'm not eligible for any scholarships/financial support from the uni. Would I have to suck it up and take out another student account with an overdraft? Or is there anything else you would recommend? :(

Edit to add: I also have my car's MOT and tax coming up...yikes

Can't help with the rest I'm afraid, but this one is very easily dealt with (and will help with the rest of your finances): sell the car.

If you've been supporting yourself, whether by claiming benefits or employment, for 3 years you'll be considered to be an independent student and not assessed on your parents' income.
  • thankyou for the replies :)

unfortunately I can't sell my car just yet as I need it to get to and from work :(

I also fall shy of the 3 years independent mark - it would be from November 2014, frustratingly enough.

Well, why not wait until September 2015 then? That'll give you longer to save as well and give you the full range of universities to apply to rather than taking your chance at Clearing.
