My son took out a free month trial with racing uk in Nov 2013. He thought that he had cancelled within the trial. However three weeks ago he received a letter to say he owed them money. After this he emailed them and said he had cancelled but they said he was still in contract until Nov 2014. I told him to except this and ring them which he then did.

In this phone call they told him that he owed a payment from Dec 2013 so he paid this, and asked whether that was all. He was then told that he was still under contract and it would now start from June 2014 to June 2015 and that the price had increased per month.

Can he stop this? He asked to cancel, and terminate the contract but they will not do it.
It has taken them 6 months to get in contact saying that he owed money and was still in contract.

Adding to this they were supposed to send a letter to inform of a price increase, which they did not do. Can they do this? The terms and conditions state that they will give one months notice of a price increase and you may cancel your account.

Is there anything he can do to get out of this? He is willing to pay the full amount just to get them to close the account if he has to.

    I'm thinking these things;

    1. racing uk is a relatively big/reputable company in the horse racing world and is probably monitored relentlessly.

    2. They are not letting you cancel a contract and nobody on here knows why. On the ace o it they can't do this but there may be something more to the issue

    3. The phone call may have served as notice o the price increase

    4. What makes you think the contract was cancelled within the trial period? And can you show this evidence to the company?

    5. "horse racing" and "son" kinda makes me wonder whether he's prone to gambling and possibly someone who gets into a dodgy contract without thinking just because he wants to watch the 2:30 at chepstow (this may not be the case but gambling is probably linked to poor inances).

    6. Linked to point 5, he has paid the Dec 2013 one without contest... me thinks he DID NOT cancel the contract in the trial period otherwise you'd contest that... So unless he cancelled in Dec he is probably liable 4 a lot more than just December's payment... and i he cancelled in Dec they'd likely have invoiced him at the time (sounds like his payment may have bounced)... Just speculating really lol

    I'm sure someone could point you in the right direction but its not really something which looks 100% the companies issue at this time

    That key and the r key is broke but as r is more common I have r set as the "paste" option so ctrl and v gives me the r :D

    edit: pretty sure mine and OP's post was deleted here which is a shame...

    Thankyou for your reply

    Yes it was his fault re cancelling policy as he emailed and on there t&c states you have to ring. So I told him he was in the wrong so should pay.

    He was expecting to pay from dec till June and then as they won't cancel contract set up the direct debit till nov

    He is aware the fault lies with him, not them and wants to pay up the full contract and have his account closed. They are refusing to do this.
