Dla to pip

At the present time I receive high rate mobility and care and esa support group due to a serious illness which I will not recover from but is not terminal at the moment although in time it may get worse. My dla is due to expire in April next year and I was wondering when I would be asked to apply for Pip. I live in the West Midlands if that helps?

When they ask for a application for pip will I still get my dla payments even though in theory it would expire in April next year? Obviously if pip hadnt come into force I would still reapply for dla as my illness has got progressively worse.

It's very confusing to understand. When should I apply for pip or will they ask me automatically?

I have read the descriptors etc and I'm not worried about not being entitled to it due to the brain injury and physical disabilities I have in my arms and neck.

Confused 50 year old needing advice please.

My understanding is, yes, it's very likely you would be required to complete a PIP form.
You will, some time before the end of the DLA award, be invited to apply for PIP.
If you return the form in time, your DLA will continue at the same rate, until they make the decision on PIP.
My understanding is that at the moment, anyone on DLA (of working age) can apply for PIP. A so-called 'self selector'.
If you are confident your new condition warrants greater payments, you might consider applying now, not waiting till April.
There are extensive delays - and your PIP payment does not begin till the decision is made.
  • Thank you Roger, is there much of a difference in payments for high rate care and mob for dla and the rates for pip? I haven't looked at the rates yet.

So If I have got this correct from your post, then if for eg I get asked to apply for pip in say dec of this year but it takes them 9 months or a year to make a decision, then my dla payments continue after the dla award would of ended (April 2015) as long as I return the completed pip forms to them by the date that they state? It's a minefield. I am confident after looking st the descriptors that I will qualify.

    Thank you.

PIP was intended to save money for the government over DLA.
The higher rates of mobility and care are the same.
There is no lower-rate care award.

And yes - the DLA award is extended if you have returned your completed forms until they reach a decision.

Sorry, I hate to disagree with Roger but there is a lower or standard rate care award in PIP. It's £54.45 a week. The higher rate of care is £81.30 a week.

Roger meant that the three Care rates under DLA are replaced by two rates under PIP... with the lowest money value one disappearing. i.e. Lower rate £21.55 a week

Thanks Rodders - I misunderstood. Phew! Was getting worried about Roger there as he's always spot on!
