What's your Gas / Electricity usage like

Options
Hi..

I try to keep up-to-date with my readings, and submit them to my Energy provider about twice a month. I'm curious to know how my usage compares against other properties & their usage. Am I frugal or are we using a lot? I've no idea!

We live in a 4 bed detached house - built 12 years ago. 4 people in the home (2 children age 16 & 18 who've no idea what it's like to shower in under 25 minutes and don't realise that lights can be turned off as well as on!!)

Usage at present on a daily basis pans out at

Electricity 16 units a day

Gas 1.8 units a day

Thoughts?

  • The average electric consumption is, I think, 3500kWh. The average gas consumption is about 15000kWh (for a rough conversion 1 metric unit = 11.3kWh). Gas especially varies with the weather. For example, in my 100 year old (not much insulation) 3 bed terrace, my gas consumption April 2012 to April 2013 was 20000kWh, but April 13 to April 14 was 14000kWh. My electricity was 5400kWh April 12 to April 13 and 4900kWh April 13 to April 14.
Now I am living on my own, for the last 3 weeks I have got the gas down to 1.15 metric units a week (basically 1 shower a day heated up by my boiler and some little use of the gas hob - no heating) and electricity usage to 45kWh a week (this is half of what it was with 3 people in the house). So 0.16 metric units of gas a day and 6.2kWh of electricity a day. Still trying hard to get electricity down but cant seem to get much more :(

Give the OP a break. At a quarter past one on a Sunday Morning, I expect he wanted to get some shut-eye. Can't you do the searching for him and post the results, ready for when he wakes up?

and I did try to suggest it without offending! Sorry if I upset the OP. I did not mean it to come over as patronising. Out of interest why did you not post your usage or thoughts, like I did the post before. I did help the poster :)

That's extremely good, certainly not "A typical".

My fridge / freezer uses most of your 3.2kWh a day!

Should have mentioned that the 3.2kWh is measured import. There is a 1.5kWp solar array on the roof that handles some of the base load in our house.
