Faulty Oven

Hi there, I purchased a combination microwave oven (this is a microwave oven and a conventional oven in one) back in 2011 from Comet. As this is a combination, it was not cheap, was well over the £200 mark.

Tonight it has just stopped working. I have kept it clean and looked after it well. Is it worth me trying to get this replaced? I doubt that Comet will be interested but based on the cost of the oven, I didn't expect that it would have failed so soon. It ended up tripping the power, I have tried a new fuse but it is just dead.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

..oh just found out, Comet ceased trading!

    You can try the manufacturer (I assume its just a comet sold oven with a known brand name?) but you will be reliant on their good will.

    Hi, yes it is a Panasonic. Have just been checking on their site and it looks like the warranties last at best for 2 years. I purchased it late 2011 so I doubt I will have a leg to stand on.

    Certainly will keep you posted. It looks like Panasonic outsource their repairs to local centres. I have just dropped my most local Panasonic approved repair shop an email to see if they can tell me if it's covered, or what step is next.

    Yup, know what you are thinking, but that could take a while to process and I will need a replacement in the mean time. Don't suppose it would hurt to try if I encounter troubles. Not sure if it is worth going to the effort of a charge back if it is not built to last this long.
    Also how does a chargeback work if Comet no longer exist?

    Five years is a fair time for a microwave to last, although some last longer, and £200 for a combi is not that expensive.

    You can try, but my view is that you won't have much joy after all this time.

    You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

    Lin, this would be under five years, but I just get the feeling that these days, products just arent built to last. After three years, you are expected to throw it in the bin as it is uneconomical to repair. It is so, so wasteful. My only annoyance is that their latest model (to replace mine) is almost £100 more than I paid last time!

    I have several credit cards, so it could take a while to find out which one I used to purchase it. If I find some time, will take a look. Otherwise I think I had better just bite the bullet and caugh up for a new one!! :p

    It's not a chargeback you would be doing, but a claim under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act. this makes the credit card supplier jointly and severally liable for any claim you have against the retailer. It does not matter that Comet ceased trading, the credit card company are still liable for the whole amount of any claim.

    So if the oven is inherently faulty and you have a claim against Comet under The Sale Of Goods Act then you can get the credit card company to provide the remedy. Since it is more than 6 months since purchase you will probably need to prove that the fault is indeed inherent by getting an engineers report.

    I have done some digging - sometimes I astound myself as I have actually managed to find the original receipt (I usually scan them, keep the originals but only for 3 years). It transpires that this microwave was purchased two years, 8 months and three days ago. So it really is not that old. Considering it was the most pricey model Comet had, one would have expected it to last a little longer. Anyway, have dropped my cc company an email on my online account. Let's see what Amex come back with - I used your wording re the sec 75 of consumer credit act.
