Buying a Kindle Fire HDX in America

Can anyone point out any negatives for buying a Kindle Fire HDX whilst in America and bringing it home, rather than buying from Amazon.co.uk ?

Apart from possible warranty problems if you need to return it I can't think of any. You can transfer the Kindle to an Amazon UK account:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=201248840

Of course you'll declare it to Customs on your return, won't you? ;)

If my total purchases in the land of the free exceeds £390, I'll be beating a path to their door, but the HDX should come in about £225ish, so I've got plenty of 'slack' to play with.

I bought a 8.9 kindle fire hdx from Best Buy $379 + MA sales tax, which came to about £238, so I saved £101 over what Amazon UK are charging.

Amazon.com currently have the 8.9 HDX on promo at $319/£189 -- if you are in the States and are able to have it delivered to a US address, thats a lot of kit for not much money ! (I'm not sure how US sales tax works on sales across stae boundries)

You only pay sales tax on mail order purchases if the retailer has a physical presence in the state that the goods are delivered to.
I buy a lot of stuff from Amazon.com and this gets delivered either to Florida or Louisiana and tax is never charged .

I suspected something along those lines - but I wasn't sure which States Amazon have a physical presence in.
Deleware might be a good place to purchase in store, as they don't have Sales Tax :D

I'm pretty sure that tablets and laptops may be imported from the USA duty free though VAT would still be payable.

Check with HMRC. I couldn't find the right link quickly but found this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/gds/Buying-laptops-in-the-US-Import-duty-VAT-and-more-/10000000013123696/g.html

Clearly not up to date showing a pre-Coalition 15% VAT rate :rotfl: but it shows the principle.

I bought an ordinary kindle from Walmart two years ago and never had any trouble. Obviously the Fire is more complex than a mere e-reader.

I do get the American offers coming through, but can't access them. I don't know why as I registered it with my UK account.
