Hi,

I apologise in advance if the answers are elsewhere in this forum, feel overwhelmed with all the information available, I would like to know if i have any hope of getting any money back with the circumstances that I am in.

first off
My Dad took out a loan for me from the TSB, it was for 5 years and it was paid off about 8 years ago, he was told that he had to have insurance on it, due to the fact that I was self-employed and it was implied that he couldn't get the loan without paying for the insurance. as he isn't with TSB anymore, it was a while ago and he doesn't have the paperwork. is there anything I can do, as he is retired and would need assistance in this as he isn't good with figures. can i get the terms and conditions from TSB or send a SAR perhaps, i don't know.

secondly for my benefit, i have had multiple credit cards, loans and bank accounts over the years, due to the fact that i was classified as self-employed, there is a strong chance that insurance was added.

for some of these, they are no longer on my credit file, so i am not sure what to do.

If i have banked with someone or held a credit card, do they have a legal obligation to disclose if I have paid PPI (insurance) with them concerning that loan/account/card.

really would appreciate any help.

I do have cards from aqua, vanquish, barclaycard and capital one. which are recent, however i did have loans from barclays in the past as well as having a previous capital one card and amex charge cards.

I have banked with Barclays for over 10 years and am considering investigating if they have miss sold me PPI, can i do that in branch.

Thanks in advance

just remembered that i had a gold amex card credit card as well

He needs to send a SAR and £10 - this doesn't guarantee paperwork, it just shows you what is left

Only you can remember who you had credit with if it's not on your credit report.
They don't have a legal obligation to tellyou anything unless you send a SAR and £10 to each company and even then, if they have destroyed records, there's nothing you can do.

Barclays may or may not tell you if you had PPI on anything, if they don't, again, it's the SAR and £10 route.

    Thanks for your reply.

Do you know if they have to, by law, say if PPI or CCP/CPP was added on a SAR if it was added to your payments.

sounds like I will have to send quite a few SAR's out then.

Oh is there any benefit in ringing up the respective companies and asking about PPI or previous accounts, or just go straight in and send a SAR.

A SAR will only produce what they have kept on file for you. If there are no records or records have been destroyed they won't suddenly become available due to a SAR.

It's a lot cheaper than a SAR, but the information available will only be what the operator can readily see on screen.
  • Hmmm the chances are that if you're self employed it wouldn't have paid out anyway. Certainly when I worked on PPI redress we got speculative letters in and we still had to investigate to see whether there had been accounts held.

Just as a thing, when I questioned my bank about a payment being added to an account, the manager had to be brought out to speak to me as the account was so old there was only him who knew about them. (Midland Orchard Account). I claimed back PPI on that account and they had all the history of it.

I think most banks have a PPI webpage, I'd check them out and maybe just make a few phone calls or send some emails before laying out money for SARs all over the place.

thanks for all of the replies.

just spoke to my dad, and because the loan is about 15 years old, and he had heard on the TV that tsb/Lloyds had said that they had destroyed all loan information for loans over 5 years ago, he doesn't think that it is pursuing, does anyone know if that is true about all loan information for loans over 5 years ago being destroyed.

i do recall being sent information for CPP reclaim a long time ago, but the letter was left out in the rain so not usable. would i right in thinking you were only sent CPP letters if you were paying CPP for a credit card.

it is interesting what has been said about being self-employed and whether it would pay out. i was self-employed for quite a while, does this mean that if i was paying out for PPI or CPP at that time, can i make a claim as it wouldn't have been something i would have agreed to, being self employed.

I can only give you my recent experiences but it may help. I called Halifax ppi team asking if they could trace any loans I'd had with them from about the year 2000 onwards and advised that all I had was info from my 2008 credit report and they located 4 loans and a mortgage all with ppi on so I've lodged complaints on all 5 due to my company paying full sick pay for 6 months. They even gave me the account numbers.
I then proceeded to call Lloyd's ppi team as i knew I'd had a few loans in the 90's with them from my old bank account but all I had was my previous addresses, low and behold she advised me I'd had 4 loans all with ppi between 1992 and 2004. Complaint made against all 4 for same reason. Not holding out much hope for much money or an upheld claim but at least gives you the idea that they can seem to trace loans at least to 1992.
My suggestion is, give them a call on their ppi team number, give them as much info as you can and they MAY be able to help.
Both banks have been very helpful In my experience so far

i dont suppose you still have the number that you called for Lloyds PPI Team do you, my dads account was with the tsb but i am assuming that your number would still be valid.

Found the number, going to ring them tomorrow, and for me, going to check with barclays about an old loan I had, amex about old credit cards and barclaycard, will update once i figure out if I have anything to complain about
  • You can request a new form for CPP - 08000 834 393 but you'd better get a move on, I think it's closing in August.

With regards to being self employed, in a lot of the cases I dealt with the policy would not have paid out and for that reason the claim was upheld.
