Large amount of foliage left behind

I had a troublesome sycamore removed by a tree surgeon. I wasn't present during the removal. When I returned the tree had been removed and most of it cut into suitable sizes for the woodburner (when it's been seasoned) so generally I'm pleased with the work. However, all the foliage had been left in a big pile in the garden.

Is this not normally/usually removed and disposed of by the tree surgeon? I should have asked the question but it didn't even occur to me that it wouldn't be removed.

There are some branches not chopped up into 'usable' pieces so I have left a voicemail asking if that can be done. Just not sure on the foliage question so would be grateful for some voices of experience to guide me.

Big bonfire?

It would cost the tree surgeon to get rid of it (local council fees) so unless you agreed to pay the extra for disposal, it would be left for you to clear.

Yep, your agreement should have included disposal.

Thanks to both - as the bloke didn't mention it then it's a done deal!

Glad to report that my kindly neighbour dragged all the large stuff (through the barn) into a place where it can be burnt off. Happy that I didn't ask him about it when I rang the bloke earlier.

    Lesson learnt....:o
  • A mistake anyone could make.

I would tend to have assumed they would take it away too and would have expected that they would tell me if they wouldn't be doing so or, on the other hand, would (but would be expecting to be paid extra for doing so).

Thanks. He did give me a price which I agreed. First time at having a tree cut down so I assumed it was all in. 😥 There will a lovely bonfire for my neighbours young son to enjoy next week.

I live and learn, even at my advancing years.

Round here they turn up with a big noisy chipper trailer behind the truck and feed in the foliage/smaller branches. Presumably they sell the chippings.
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • I've seen one of those chipper trailers when some trees were trimmed recently and was wondering whether I dare ask for the chippings to go on the garden or whether the firm concerned sell them on or something.

I've also seen men with vans and not been sure what happens to the cut-off wood.

Round here, there are a noticeable number of woodburners in homes and I know one of my friends, for instance, would be glad of anything suitable she got offered to put in hers.

Any decent lumps of wood will end up being sold as firewood. The chippings are almost worthless, and tree surgeons are often looking for places to dump them.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

They are? Ooh good - I'll give the local chap a call & ask how he's doing. Curently I'm spending money on chippings to supress weeds - if he wants to dump several trailerfuls, I can accomodate him cheerfully!

I'll mention it to the Bursar as well - she was lamenting the "running cost" of one of the play areas which has 8" deep chippings. (The *worst* cost is lost toys, but lorryloads of chippings are a dent in the Early Years budget.)

Thank you OP & I hope your neighbour has both marshmallows & an invitation for you to join the fun?

DfV - yes, am sure they will offer.

All the large trunk pieces are now stashed away to season for two years, the woodburner will love them.

Foliage cleared - no response from tree surgeon though I'm sure he'll be in touch soon with his invoice!

Left the chippings on the garden, now way of collecting them up.

I've got a friend who is a carpenter and I get bags of wood shavings which I use as part of the starting process for the fire - love to see how they burn so fast!

    Thanks to all.
