Hi
I recently bought a new camera (Nikon D3300) and am looking at using quite a lot professionally so I was wondering what insurance I can get on it or whether it is needed.

What sort of insurance do you want on it? Normal hobby use would be either an extended warranty and/ or theft/fire/AD type cover which can be provided by your home insurance or a dedicated camera/ gadget cover.
The issue here is you say "professional use", in which case home insurance traditionally wont cover it. There are professional camera policies but they typically are more aimed at those with a couple of D800s and a range of lenses rather than a single entry level SLR.
Outside of the camera itself then the most common insurance for Pro Photographers are PL and PI which will cover (a) if you somehow injure someone and (b) if you mess up a shoot and your client sues you. If these two classes of cover are relevant depends on how seriously you really mean about using it professionally a lot0
