How do we stand if as it seems, we cant find an exact like for like, ie different colour (red more sought after harder to find more expensive, black more common, cheaper, less desirable ) can only find a black 2 years newer which he never wanted in the first place and spent a lot of time finding the red one he wanted. I know it's not the insurers fault but can any of this be taken into account or is it a case of "tough" get on with it make do!!0

If you can't find an exact match then unfortunately there's not a lot that you or the insurer can do about it. Their obligation is to pay the market value of the model which was lost (less the relevant deductions). If you could only find one, say, two years newer, they wouldn't have to pay you enough to replace it with a newer model.
If the red ones are more valuable than the black ones, and you have evidence to show this, that's a point you could use to argue for a bigger payout.
It's a bit late now, but you can get "agreed value" policies for rare or classic vehicles where the write off value is agreed in advance; it may be worth looking into whether one of those is suitable in future.0 -
Many many thanks to you all0
