Ending a rental agreement - Dispute

Hello Everyone,
This is my first post, so please bear with me!
My husband and I have been renting a house on a rolling (six months) short hold tenancy agrement for about three years now. We have decided to move house, to another rental property because I am pregnant and as I cannot work now we need to save a bit of money!
We informed the letting agents of our plans and asked them to look out for a suitable property for us, in the mean time we continued searching and now we have found one and have signed a tennancy agreement to move in on the 20th of July.
We handed our notice where we currently live on the 5th of July, so we had a bit of time to move (with me being 27 weeks pregnant now, I am a little slow!). The agent said to us that we had handed in our notice two days after our rent day (3rd of the month) and so we would be required to pay the rent on our current property until the 3rd of September!
I have read through and read through our short hold tenancy agreement and no where does it say that we have to give notice to co-incide with our rent payment day. It just says that after the first six months we are required to give four weeks notice.
If anyone has any advice for us please do post it as this really will hit us financially.

The agent is right.
You are on a periodic tenancy so unless agreed otherwise your notice must be given on the day the rent is due.

If your agreement is periodic (ie. rolling from week to week or month to month), you normally have to give at least four weeks' notice to end it, or a month if you have a monthly tenancy. The notice must be in writing and must end on a day when the rent is due, or the day before. Ask an adviser about the dates if you're in any doubt.
I suggest your read the shelter website as it has useful information on tenancies.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

Doesn't this depend on whether it is fact 4 weeks notice or 1 months notice that is required.If it is 4 weeks OP would have given notice in time.0

If you pay rent monthly you are on a monthly periodic tenancy and have to give one months notice to end on a rent day.
If your rent day is the third you need to give notice before the third of August to leave on 3rd September, if you misseed the 3rd July cut off.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. I'm afraid the agent is right as others have said on here.
Alot of people get caught out on this one. Sorry.I can take no responsibility for the use of any free comments given, any actions taken are the sole decision of the individual in question after consideration of my free comments.

As others have already said, you do normally have to pay rent for a whole period.
The exception being if the agent has already issued notice. Many agents routinely issue a S21 notice requiring possession at the start of the tenancy to all tenants even if they don't currently want the tenant to leave. This notice is valid indefinitely. The agent serves it so that they can ask the tenant to leave later on without having to give any more notice. But it also means that the tenant can leave without notice too.
So check all your paperwork to see if you were given this, if so you can leave anytime and only have to pay rent for the days you were in occupation.0
