Could be a branch that has broken and is now hanging down (vertically).

That said, you'd expect drivers to have spatial-awareness, and be able to notice something that is 'the mother of all banches'.

Not yet clear it was a static object

All post 1 says is it was overhanging in the title, then it was sticking out vertically in the explanation.

How that can knock wing mirrors off 4 vehicles beats me.

Technically true but if it fell down infront of them I expect most people would mention that.

With the driving ability of people round my neck of the woods and their judgement skills I'd be surprised that it was only 4 cars

But surely if they were in the neck of the woods they would be used to trees? ;)

You should report it to the Highways Agency and or Police so they can get the offending branch removed to save other drivers from ramming it.

Look on ebay or other sites for secondhand wing mirrors if yours are damaged, which will be the most cost effective way to repair you car.

Call the Police ASAP and inform them, Seek as much comensation from the Tree.

I believe the department you need to speak to is the "Special Branch" ensure they LOG your complaint. Don't be put off, you are not barking up the wrong Tree on this one.

I'm a bit of a sap and it took me a while to twig what happened, but this leaves us with the question of what was the root cause of this problem . . .
