Cash machine did not give me my £210 but still debited it from my account

Hi This is my first post and I know im probably in the wrong place so sorry, but just need a bit guidence from somebody ..anybody!

Last Week I had to take out £200 from a cash machine in order to pay a chunk of rent bill in cash. The cash machine money slot opened and then closed, no money came out. I put my card back in again and too my dismay the money had been debited from my account.

I went to local Barclays (my bank) they informed me that it was probably just a glitch with the machine and that after 2 working days the machine would relies it was not balanced and refund me the money. So I took a further £200 out to pay my bill. After 2 working days I relised it had still not been put back in, so I went to another branch explained the situation and Barclays said they would send the other bank in question whos atm machine it was a report which would make the money come back in my account in 24 hours. It dident, I then called Barclays up they said that they were conducting an investigation in the matter that would not be finished for another further 12 working days! Well over 20 days after the initial error with the ATM occurred, and even then they will not guarantee that i can get the money back. I am seriously in trouble without that money, I have bills which cannot get paid, and I don't know what im going to do about food/fuel. I explained this to barclays and they said "well you have overdraft why not use that", i explained that i am poor and already have to use my overdraft, at this point they got angry with me and said there is no help they can give me until the investigation is complete. I know for a fact that money dident come out, i stayed there for ages waiting to see if anything would happen but no. I know that machine made an error, but its now going to take over 20 days to sort out with no guarantee, i will be unable to pay for food, and fuel without that money until i get paid next month, what can i do to make them sort this out quicker, sorry for the long post and thankyou in advance for any help.

I've gone to make a withdrawal from cash machien and nothing came out.Contacted my baNk and they said no to worry I would not be charged as its likely a machine error.Would rectify after a few days and it did.

Have you got a friend or family you can borrow the money from?Maybe try citizens advice bureau, they might be able to put you in contact with people who can help tie you over financially whilst waiting for the bank.If you're still wound up over it I'd refrain from going back into the bank, just in case you end up in a row and they over react.
  • hi, ok thats good news, gives me some hope, thanks , however its been a few days now for me, so still on tender hooks. Yes i can borrow from friend/family if it boils down to it, just annoying, i get ripped off by barclays left right and center but this time takes the biscuit, and their customer service is appalling, but i suppose that's only to be expected.

Raise it as a formal complaint and you may well get a few quid for your time and trouble, though it won't help in the short term. You can take your complaint to the regulator but the bank have 6-8 weeks to investigate so takes time, the complaint may hurry things along as they don't like recording complaints as it looks bad on their records.

If Barclays are bad then change your account, many alternatives that pay in credit interest, have free or cheap overdrafts and other perks, all listed in this site and repeated in the forums.

Whilst talking about overdrafts, have a look at the online calculator from Barclays:
    http://www.barclays.co.uk/CurrentAccounts/Youroverdraft/P1242557964230

I had an overdraft for years when I was younger, didn't think to look at how much it cost. The calculator is for monthly costs, but if you compound that interest your paying over a few years it'll soon mount up.
