Another novice question - coffee grounds as fertiliser

I've read in many different places that used coffee grounds are great for the garden and I've just started growing some vegetables and there are some snails in the garden too so I've also read that it's a deterrent for them.

Anyway, my question - How much coffee grounds am I likely to use (my garden is best described as slightly bigger than average)?

The reason I ask is that I'm working in an office short term and their canteen bags up the used coffee grounds and leaves it out for anyone to help themselves to, each bag is around a kilo. Just wondering how much I should realistically take since I will only be able to get it for the next couple weeks. That and I don't drink coffee so produce my own waste coffee grounds.

I heard that coffee grounds are good to compost and deter slugs but then again I heard that they can turn the ground acid so I don't know what would be best.

Ok thanks. I've got 2 bags so far I guess it won't hurt to take a few more.

You'd need to use a huge amount before it had any effect on the soil's acidity.
