If you move in with your GF then after 12 months you can jointly apply for RTB.

Rent isn't paid for no reason. Rent is paid to put a roof over your head.

The 12 months is for family members only.

If you wanted to buy you would of had to of been a tenant of social housing for 5 years and this is your only or main home.

Edit: And it has to be a secure tenancy, you can only apply to go on the tenancy after you have been living there 12 months.

Good point. I'd forgotten about the part about being a tenant of social housing for 5 years.

In Scotland rtb is ending in 2016.

She is being wise and cautious to be keeping her place, her own security.

If further down the line you intended to become joint tenants and submit a Right to Buy application and buy the council house, you would need to sell your other property first.

As secure tenants you would not able to exercise a right to buy unless it is your only home. If you did and the council find out about the other home at a later stage they could require repayment of the discount or bring proceedings for damages against the tenant.

If they got an award of damages against the tenant they could attach that judgment by way of a charging order over the property.

If they were living together as man and wife, that would count. She would still be the tenant and the applicant for the purpose of RTB, but no reason for him to not fund the purchase.

You are confusing the terms "house" and "home". It matters not if he owns another house as long as the council property is his home.

Are you saying that as a Joint tenant the OP can own another property and also exercise the RTB with his future wife?..

If so thats against every Council/HA tenancy I have seen (which is around a dozen, lol) .

All of the Tenancy agreements clearly state "A tenant who is named on the tanency agreement (either soley or jointly ) may not own another property".A partner who is not on the TA can own another property.

Them's the rules. You can have another dozen houses and still excersise your RTB. No restrictions on property ownership at all.
