Does she know that you know she was checking up on you? In your shoes I'd ask her directly and ask her why she doesn't trust you - these are perfectly reasonable questions. Throwing paperwork in her face will just annoy her further. She's your boss, not your enemy so have a grown up conversation with her and get to whatever the issue really is.

Why are people so scared of each other these days? Approach the manager and ask her calmly why she felt the need to check out your story, problem solved.

How did you neighbour know it was your area manager and that it was another work colleague that drove her there?

And no there is no law/regulation etc to say she can't do what she did, but as someone else has said....if your record is exemplary why did she feel the need to check up on you?

Just a matter of interest why did'nt you go in your car?

Maybe his car is only a runaround and not capable of a 200 mile trip

I think you should concentrate on why your area manager thinks you are untrustworthy.
She didn't just happen to see your car as she was passing, she had a suspicion and went out of her way, requiring someone else's help, to investigate it.

It does seem strange and an over reaction.

One bit of information omitted by the OP that may help to explain things, what was the purpose of the trip to the HQ?

Many years ago I worked for an employer that would call your home number every day if you went off sick to check you were at home. They'd just put the phone down when you answered (in the days before 1471). I only found out when another employee worked it out, having been dragged out of her bed 3 days in a row to answer a silent call. I recalled being called when I took an afternoon off.

Hope so because otherwise I wouldn't put it past Mrs Suspicious to think it was actually the girlfriend who broke down!

Still quite a coincidence if it would happen to be exactly half way to where he was supposed to be. I assume if the manager is that suspicious, she will want evidence of the location of the pick-up.

I don't really know why it would matter, but the OP states:

"I didn't attend the meeting as I got towed home and called to try and rearrange it for tomorrow instead and I would get a train"

so I'm going to take a wild guess and say the trip was for a meeting :).

It's not a company car, it's my own.

I will take my paperwork in tomorrow, I think I'll photocopy it and pin one on her noticeboard to make my point.

I wonder why they have you down as a problematic member of staff...

Personally if I had paperwork proving it I would be photocopying it and flinging it around her office like confetti with a smug grin on my face.

Well, placing one copy on her desk at least.

If you have proof it just makes her look the fool for taking time out of her day to go and snoop on you, so don't hesitate to provide it. Without it, who knows what she's adding to your current exemplary record?

Me too! What a cheeky cow spying on someone's home. Sounds very creepy and sinister to me actually. I would be pulling her up on this and giving her my proof of where I had been. As a few posters have said; there has to be some paperwork from the recovery people.

I would also probably start looking for another job.
