Unless you've got a quiet car, I've found voice activated sat navs are hit and miss, more often miss.

Useless in Wales unless you're Welsh.
Try saying Coedwig Coed Y Brenin near Dolgefeiliau.

Useless in Scotland unless you're Scottish.
Try saying Bruichladdich on Loch Indaal on Islay

England is no better either - well for me anyway. :(

How many people are really sure how to pronounce Wheathampstead?

Is it Wheat-hampstead or Wheathamp - stead?

    Get the idea?

And as for crossing the channel - words fail me.

A Sat-Nav is most useful in places that you are unfamiliar with so you are highly likely to mispronounce them.

But are those that created the satnav/ voice command rules any better at knowing how they should be said? You may find its english speakers the systems understand better than those who give welsh/scottish pronunciations

Dont know if mine has voice commands or not. I know in general the car does but dont know if that extends to the satnav or not. Tried it for making calls etc a couple of times and was underwhelmed by it -v- the simplicity of just selecting who you want to call etc

You can use an android phone with OKGoogle, not very accurate, I use it sometimes for dialling calls when driving, but you have to pronounce things phonetically, which might be completely different to how you would normally speak.

The sat nav in my car is voice activated. I only ever prod it with my fingers though.

Do you mean a stand alone unit? The voice recognition of devices nowadays are pretty good, I had voice activated nav on my car and impressed with it now, it took some getting used to as it only understands certain command words.

Wouldn't it be great if someone invented a system with a series of letters and numbers that corresponded with small geographical areas, I don't know maybe call it 'code post' or something similar :D

Nah - all the idiots would be referring to it as "7 digit code post", as they're too stupid to know the difference between a "character" and a "digit"!
