Conveyancing Comparison Sites

Currently a home owner and just about to sell my current propoerty and buy a new house with my wife.

I just wondered whether these conveyancing comparison sites are any good or whether I should just contact a range of solicitors direct?

On a bit of a budget and really need to keep the costs down to a minimum. I don't trust the £99 conveyancing that appears in google (feels a bit too cheap) so just wanted to get some feedback.

Current property is in Warwick and new property is in Worcester so if there any good recommendations also, that would be welcome.

I'm wondering the same thing!! Currently selling in Stratford-Upon-Avon, the estate agents have recommended there own solicitors (obviously!) and I have also got a few local quotes aswell however they are about twice the price of any which I received through an online comparison website - I need to instruct someone ASAP but unsure whether or not to trust the online ones as much as I want to keep costs as low as possible - anyone who has used an online based service and can share there experience would be much appreciated?
  • I used an online comparison site, although the firm I used wasn't an online only service, and I was extremely impressed with the services I received.

The property we bought was in Warwickshire too, but the solicitors were in Leicester. Working 9-5 means that I would have struggled to go in to even a very local firm, so it didn't really matter where they were based.

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post recommendations (admins feel free to remove) but I did the comparison through compareandconvey.co.uk and chose to go with Edwards, Hands & Lewis, and couldn't recommend them highly enough.

Prices were a lot more competitive than any of the local ones I contacted.

Speed, efficiency (and price) for a straightforward sale/purchase are obviously important factors.

I guess another aspect is how effective they are if any obstacles or problems should arise in the process. Would a low price / high volume solicitor just kind of give up (because they are working on such tight margins), leaving the sale to fall through?

And whilst some solicitors may be faster, are they also less thorough? Might you find in a few years time that they failed to spot a potential problem in a lease etc?
