Council Tax reduction

Hi - I m hoping someone will have an opinion/guidance for me. I have completed the benefits checker on MSE and it has suggested a reduction in council tax as my daughter is in receipt of high level mobility and medium rate care (recently reduced from high). I called our local council (Wiltshire) to see if I can get a council tax reduction and was told the only eligibility is if receiving means tested benefits (we don't) or if the house has been adapted with downstairs bathroom, kitchen etc for wheelchair. My daughter isn't in a wheelchair and the house hasn't really been adapted - although the council did put a downstairs toilet in for us about 5 years ago. Does anyone know if we should be eligible for a reduction (I am unsure why it is only for wheelchair users).
thank you

How old is your daughter ? - depending on the situation a carers disregard may be applicable (the rules for this are the same for all councils in England and Wales ) http://www.lewisham.gov.uk/myservices/counciltax/reductions/Pages/council-tax-for-carers.aspx
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.

    Hi OP,

It is for those who have had large adaptations for living, and wheelchair users, mainly due to the severe and enduring nature of the disability. Unfortunately, getting DLA/PIP doesn't change any of that, and as previous poster suggested, you may be able to get a carers reduction.
