Glad to hear that she's beginning to eat. It's really good that your vets have been keeping her on fluids until now. Fingers crossed for the 2 of you.

Well finally I have my lovely cat back home.

She was discharged from the vets yesterday morning I am pleased to say. She was given strong painkillers by injection and antibiotics before leaving the vets and I have to take her back later to the vets later today for a check up and more pain killer etc if needed.

Once home she was quite happy and playful, infact almost back to normal, other than she cannot yet use her back legs to spring onto the bed albeit she could just about manage to get onto the lower sofa. She even ate a whole sachet of Chicken Sheba and some IAMS dried food overnight and has had a drink and used the litter tray as well.

This morning I think the pain killer has worn off and despite giving her a dose of Loxicom (prescribed by the vet) she is not moving around very much, and looks to be in a bit of discomfort.

I will ask the vet if there is any stronger medication she can be given to keep pain at bay a bit longer when I shortly take her back.

Glad to hear progress is being made on the eating front and it does sound like a more effective pain relief will be the key short-term to aid recovery..

You could suggest trying Tramadol - in addition to meloxicam

You may need to convince your vet so here's some background/case history- albeit in guinea pigs!

    BACKGROUND
My exotics vet and I both agree from our experiences over the last few years (with my many guinea pigs), that sometimes the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory meloxicam doesn't "cut the mustard" as far as neurological pain relief is concerned and on an increasing number of occasions now opt for Tramadol

Whilst meloxicam is still often prescribed for my pets for its anti-inflammatory effects, Tramadol is given either in addition or instead as we have found the latter is more effective at relieving deep-rooted pain that is preventing normal eating in situations such as bladder/kidney stones, inner ear infections, end-stage cancer and trauma.

I am happy to provide the name/contact details of my vet via PM if your vet wishes to speak to them first.

(NB for the benefit of others reading this thread - Guinea pigs (and rabbits) are herbivores and their guts need to keep moving continuously otherwise they end up "in stasis". Sometimes the first indication of pain is that they stop eating and if not "managed" properly in a timely fashion, this can result in gut stasis or bloat and death.
Tramadol is an opiate so could potentially contribute to slowing the guts down/causing stasis - which is why it is not often prescribed for piggies/rabbits except by vet to vet recommendation. My vet and I have overcome the gut stasis problem by firstly ensuring the animal is routinely syringe fed (if it isn't eating properly) and secondly by co-prescribing gut motility drugs such as emeprid/cisapride/zantac alongside the Tramadol)

Ian I just wanted to say that reading your posts I had tears in my eyes, you are an amazing person and I really hope your little kitty feels better soon. My kitten was unwell last year and it was the saddest time for me.

There should be more people like you around. xx
