Pros/Cons of Wooden Floor v Wooden Laminate

Was wondering what you think are the pros & cons of sanding a wooden floor and staining/polishing it, as opposed to laying laminate wooden boards on top of it?

For example, does the laminate reduce heat loss though the floor, noise produced when walking on either surface, aesthetics, price, or anything else.

Are the floorboards original?

It's more work to keep the original one but once it is sanded and varnished it will look a million times better than any laminate. That's just my opinion though.

I'd say a lot depends on the wooden floor in question - what condition the boards are in, what size of gaps there are at the tongues or between the boards, whether you get any draft blowing through them etc.

I think it also depends on the style you're going for, personally I think dark stained boards, even if somewhat rough can look nice in old Victorian houses, they add to the character. The rough, varnished floorboards in my 1990s house, well they just looked rough (and got covered over with better solid wood flooring!).

And of course if you're talking about something like paraquet that you've uncovered - original all the way!
