When to time a switch? Help

Hi please help,
my contract with isupply electricity has the date of the 12th August, however they didn't start my fixed contract until the 15th September. As there is often a delay in switching and I want to check out the best deal now, when can I actually start the process? Bearing in mind the switch won't happen for at least a month, firstly which date am I working to the 12th August or the 15th September? And secondly how far in advance is it best to start the process bearing in mind it seems to take so long to switch and I don't want to go onto a variable rate but neither do i want to be charged for breaking my contract too soon? Anyone know the answer to this please? Thanks
