Another Kindle or Tablet?

Afternoon,

I know there are loads of threads on here about tablets but my problem is my much loved, well used, cant leave home without it Kindle has well and truly packed up and needs to be replaced.

I have been thinking about getting a tablet for some time, and figured I could kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

But, I am aware that most tablets are no good for reading in sunshine, and I do like to read a huge amount and if I can grab some rays at the same time, even better!

Is there anything I have missed that bridges the gap between the Kindle and Tablet?

It will be primarily used as a e-reader ( I assume, knowing how much I have used my Kindle over the years) I have looked at the Kindle Fire but am unsure about the screen in sunlight, or bad eyes if its a really good book!

Any advice?

Thanks

  • Well.. i've 'hacked' my Nook simple touch, so that it is also an Android tablet AND an eReader.

E.g. it might be a Nook, but i can also install the Kindle book reader, or a web browser (it has wifi but no 3G)

However, it's a bit rubbish for anything other than ebook reading!

    There's no great cross-over really

Kindle has better screen in the sun otherwise its just a tablet that's restricted to Kindle stuff in my opinion .
A decent tablet will not have the excellent Kindle reading ability but it will read Kindle and all other e formats . It will play music and video have note taking ability web browsing email and probably GPS mapping .
It may also have the ability to watch TV programs a camera an office suite of some description .PDF reader calender YouTube Tweet app scanner and a few more i cannot think of .

I have a Kindle and a Nexus Tablet. I have the Kindle app on my tablet. I use the tablet for reading if I am travelling and not likely to be out in the sunshine. If I wish to read outdoors I use my Kindle. You can download books from the Kindle store to both devices and then sync to last page read depending on which device you are currently using.

I sold my Kindle when I bought my iPad mini thinking it would be fine to read books on, and honestly I think it was a mistake.

The iPad is 'ok' to read on, but I find it less comfortable on the eyes for long periods of time. It is also heavier which again leads to a slightly less comfortable experience.

If you read books daily, an e-ink ereader is a must, IMO. A tablet will do in an emergency (and is also better for magazines, if you're into those), but it's no match for e-ink.

Did you have one of the old Kindles with the physical change-page buttons? I've got one of those (the K3, the keyboard one), and I'm dreading the day I have to replace it with a swiper. It might not sound like a big thing, but having to physically move your finger against the screen for each page turn instead of just squeezing the button slightly makes a big difference! I'd try before you buy, if possible.

If you get a tablet for e-reading, a high resolution/high PPI is a must-have. The 9" Nook HD+ has an excellent screen and is a great Android tablet - especially at its unbelievable price of ~£110.

My old keyboard style Kindle started to play up so I tried using my iPad for a while - the screen reflection drove me nuts.

I have a Kindle Fire HD which is supposed to have a better screen for reading whilst having the benefit of being a tablet - the screen is still too reflective to be really comfortable.

So, I bought a Kindle Paperwhite and I absolutely love it. You don't have to 'swipe' to change pages, you can just tap and you soon get used to it.

Try looking on Amazon - they do refurbished Kindles, with a 12 month warranty, at good savings. I bought my Fire on a recent offer and the condition was like new.

John Lewis is also a good place to buy as they do 2 year warranties on new Kindles.

You can't beat a dedicated e-reader if you read a lot - tablet screens just aren't the same.

Yes, tapping: Carefully lift thumb from bezel. Touch screen with thumb. Replace thumb on bezel.

    Physical buttons: squeeze.

The touchies are an inferior solution. There are plenty of things I could "get used to" - a slower CPU, a pay cut, losing an eye. I'd prefer not to. ;)

There are a few techie articles about the misuse of touchscreens today, and while it's not as egregious as some, this is clearly one of those times where a touchscreen is a step down.

I've got a kindle fire, the wide has a paperwhite.

Went on holiday in the Caribbean earlier in the year and used both quite extensively.

To be honest, the Fire's fine for reading, even in direct sunlight...You just need to make sure the brightness is at the right level for the conditions.

We browsing, facebook etc are also pretty good on it, definite added value.

That said, it isn't *as* easy on the eyes as e-ink...and the battery life is a fraction as long...so you have to keep charging it most days after heavy use.

So, you pays your money and you take your choice, really.

    Thanks for all the replies.

I do read loads probably 3 or 4 books a week I guess (if only I read something of note and not utter trash most of the time!).

I see there is an obvious invention to be made here a Kindlet maybe?

It is awful not having it I feel like someone has cut me off my escapism and now I have to face the real world and read The Metro which does not make me happy!

Another Kindle seems to be the way it seems.
