Charged for stamps we did not get

My wife bought some stamps along with other items from a well known chain store. The girl on the till seemed distracted by another member on her till who wanted to exchange some money from her till. When my wife looked in her bag at home she found the stamps were not there (she remembers asking the girl did she remember to charge for the stamps and she said yes) I have emailed them to say we were charged for stamps the shop assistant failed to pack and they tell us no stamps are missing from that store. They have offered a voucher for the store to the value of the stamps as a "goodwill gesture" but she doesn't want a voucher, she wants refunding for something she did not receive.
I have since emailed back stating that she definatley did not have any stamps in her bag from them.
Is there anywhere we can take this further ?

Take the voucher, get the stamps.
Is it worth the hassle of trying to prove she was charged for them and didn't get them. It doesn't sound like you have a receipt.0 -
We certainly do have a receipt. Though buying the stamps is a good idea :-) I never thought of that.0

Unless of course stamps are exempt from the vouchers as could well be the caseOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

This happened to me at PC World once - with a software package. The stock check proved they were one over so they knew that it hadn't gone in the bag but had been picked up from the counter and restocked. So they handed it over again with profuse apologies.
If Paperchase do the same - they know the stamps did not go back in the till. So they could have missed the bag and been knocked onto the floor and are lying under the counter now. Or been picked up by the next customer or got stuck to the back of whatever they bought. Or pocketed by a dishonest staff member.
If they were cynical they could also think that your wife a) dropped them out of the bag after leaving the store or b) is trying it on. Your wife's word againt the assistant's (unless they have very good CCTV to check). But rather than suggest that - which you would be ranting harder at - they are offering the voucher to encourage you to at least come back.
Is it worth the hassle for a max of £7.50 when you have the voucher?I need to think of something new here...0
