Hi I want to make some redcuurant jelly this year. Normally the birds get to them before we can pick. My OH won't make fruit cage as only one bush. They leave blackcurrants alone. So any hints to discourage the birds. Thanks

Fleece pegged to the branches. Don't bank on them leaving the blackcurrants alone either...Please do not quote spam as this enables it to 'live on' once the spam post is removed.

Charity shop net curtains and clothespegs to wrap the bush up. If you don't want to go that far bits of tinsel or old cds hung up may have some scarecrow effect. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

The Poundshop (Oh, MSE, prolly the 99p shops too) sell those rotary windmills in the shape of insects. I have a dozen in the strawberry beds, and the blackbirds find them most alarming. Quite funny, if rather shameful to admit, watching a blackbird make hopping advances to where it spotted fruit the day before, to then come across a 12" ladybird with rotating wings, fly off with a "Lawks a mursy" screech.
Even cheaper, cut strips of cooking foil, tie to branches.
More expensive, but much tastier, use foil from Cadbury's bars. YUM!0 -

Yep, fleece pegged to branches is WTG, I have loads of cherries the year, covered in fleece to stop the bird's breakfast
