Repair of Brick Shed

Hi there,

At the back of our Garden there is a shed. A brick/block shed, dating from the 50's/60's, which a previous tenant/owner extended forward but made it from wood. As it was not made of decent materials, over the years, due to the rain and bad wind we have had it has become damaged. Basically you do not need the key to open the door, it is opened that much that you can get in to the side of the door. Rain can also pour in through the gaps in the wood. It wasn't like this when we moved in.

Several times I reported this to the Lettings Agency and nothing got done. Finally someone came out and agreed something needed doing, either repair the damage or tear down the wooden structure and take it back to the bricked shed and put on a decent door.

Fast forward 2 weeks of pestering the Agency they said that the Landlord will replaced our front door (another issue) but won't do anything with the shed.

Now, as I have bikes, tools, garden equipment and a BBQ stored in the shed ( I have no where else to store them) where do I stand if we get burgled? there have been a spate of Shed/garage burglaries in our area!

I doubt our contents insurance will cover it because it is not secure he won;t repair it?!?! Help

Sheds do not need to be maintained, the LL doesn't have to do anything.

If you are living their long term then it's in your interests to do something with it, the LL wont care, he doesn't live there.

Ok, fair enough, but if I was a Landlord I would want to keep the property I own in a decent state. Perhaps that's just me...

So if he doesn't have to do anything, can I tear it down without any repercussions?

Um no. He may not have to maintain it but it's still his pile of leaky bricks.

If you're staying for a while maybe you could offer to repair it yourself or make a contribution to a repair.

Seems a bits backwards IMHO, but that's life I suppose. Well I am not going to pay for it, or contribute, I'm not going to stay there for much longer anyways.

    Thanks for your advice
