Yes, if she wants to return to work (and doesn't *have* to earlier) that shouldn't be before the child is 3 yo. That is the info I gathered from Oliver James in his book Affluenza, and is based on several studies showing that the kind of care received between 6 months and 3 years of age is very important in creating secure individuals in later life.
I'm afraid I don't know about tax implications, but I would certainly recommend the above book to your friend, and maybe she can follow up some of the sources herself and make an informed decision.Cogito, ergo sum.0 -
I went back to work when my son was 3 and a half months. It was really tough. I worked two nights a week and my husband looked after him. I went to sleep when he did. I now work three day shifts or two nights a week. My husband and I juggle childcare between us. Do you really want or have to go work? It's hard when they are so young. My son is now 6. I took him out of pre-school as he was unhappy. Your local authority can give you details of nurseries, childminders ect. but think long and hard, unless you need the money or are going crazy at home!0

I worked p/time evenings and w/ends when I had eldest from him being 7 months old to 2.5 years old. I loved it, was able to do housework, attend baby groups, go to gp appt during day and at night my nan had him for an hour before DH came home from work. I had to pack this in due to illness in pregnancy with youngest and shortly after this family members who'd helped me with childcare became ill themselves and could no longer have helped me.
I then stayed at home until eldest went to f-time school and then did 6 months as a dinner lady. By this time nan was well enough to have my daughter over lunch period whilst I worked. I packed the job in 18 months ago in order to go to college and get some qualifications back. I'll continue at college for at least the next academic year, so by the time I do return to a weekday daytime job, mine will be at least 8.5 and 5.5 years old.0
