Found Jake the cat 'playing' with a baby bird this morning, it's still a bundle of fluff really and he had cut the top of it's wing.
Normally i must confess I just leave him to it, feeling it's kinder to just let him kill it rather than leaving it to suffer.
However, he quickly lost interest in the bird and it was very much alive.
I have put it in a tub layered with grass and vent holes in the top and kept the cat in.
I noticed a little blackbird hoping round the garden near the baby with a worm in its mouth so i took the lid off the box and the blackbird fed it.
The blackbird comes back sporadically.
SO what do i do now?
I have put the lid back on for now just in case Jake gets out but what do i do if it's still alive tomorrow?

I don't get nearly enough credit for not being a violent psychopath.

it obviously too young to be out of the nest. Do you know what tree it has been nesting in? if you can't find the nest or it has been destroyed , is there something small that you could lodge in a tree that could act as a nest? The bird cannot survive for long in the condition it is in now. Hth
in fact if you can pop a few small worms in its beak that would obviously help. And anything that you put in the tree as a nest needs to have some sort of lining . thx"if the state cannot find within itself a place for those who peacefully refuse to worship at its temples, then it’s the state that’s become extreme".Revd Dr Giles Fraser on Radio 4 20170 -

Don't waste your time trying to feed it, you will do more harm than good. Take the lid off the box, give the parent bird access and let nature take it's course. If you are really bothered about garden birds then don't get another cat.0

Here's the RSPB advice, one for injured birds and one for babies.

You could get in touch with a vet, but honestly, I think this is one of the many baby birds in the wild that don't make it to maturity. Very sad when you see it happening, but it happens all the time.0 -
I'm not feeding it, it's mother is, I don't think having a cat means you are quite happy seeing a baby bird suffer.PintAndAPie wrote: »Don't waste your time trying to feed it, you will do more harm than good. Have a look for a wildlife rescue near you, they might be happy to take the bird. I found a baby robin with an injured leg in my garden this week, the local wildlife rescue came and collected it and said they hand rear it.0
