Washing school ties

Following on from the school blazer thread, tomorrow I have to go and kit my youngest out with the parts of the uniform only available from the school, one of which is the school tie.

I looked to see how many we already have (it's 4:eek:- I already have an older child at the school) and was thinking of just buying 1 new tie or maybe 2, so each child has a new one and just cleaning up the rest as spares. They don't tend to last a whole academic year as they are clip on ones and the clip often snaps. As they are clip on ones, they are already tied, and I really don't have a clue how to go about washing them :o. I could afford to put one in the washing machine and see how it fares since we have so many, but thought I'd ask here first.

The ties are red in colour with a black and white diagonal stripe running through.

  • I can't help with how to wash them, but I only had on tie for the full time I was at Secondary School!

I just bung my children's tie in a coloured wash. Never had a problem with colours running or clips breaking.

I hand washed my children's standard polyester school ties quite a few times, and just line-dried them then pressed them under a clean tea towel.

Wash in a normal synthetics load at 30-40 degrees. Dry on line or rad then iron back to shape. It's not like they're silk!

I started off with only one school tie for my DD, then she mislaid it and was possibly going to get a detention for not having the correct uniform on (luckily she found it at school that day). Now I have a spare - but only one. Its not a clip one, but I just wash it on a 30 degree wash and line dry.

I definitely only had one of each tie (you got a different one when older) and it was just washed with everything else!

Surely you've washed the older ones?

Nope :p. They never normally last so long, they've broken after a term or so and been replaced. How exactly we have ended up with 4 in total this year is beyond me. Whenever husbands ties have ended up accidentally in the wash (non-clip ones) they've unraveled at the back iyswim, which is why I've never put a school one in the wash. I thought it would be worse with a tie that is already knotted at the top. I'll give it a try tomorrow.

We don't have clip on ties but they have one each, I doubt I'll buy any spares - I had one for 7 years

Really?! I've never had a problem washing (non clip) ties. Would prob do clip ones in the sink but have never had one I'm afraid.

How dirty are they? I would just hand wash them in the sink rather than put them in the washing machine.
